SARMs Are Bad, Mmmk?

By: Robert A. Schinetsky

Building size and strength requires a considerable amount of time, effort, and commitment. It can take years for athletes to achieve their ideal physique or level of strength, even with proper diet, nutrition, and training.

A vast majority of lifters enjoy the process of training and are more than willing to endure the self-induced torture that is training for as long as it takes. Others aren’t as patient and want their results now.

Frequently, these lifters will turn to anabolic steroids, or more recently, athletes seeking a “quick fix” to the size and strength woes have embraced SARMs.

What are SARMs?

SARMs is short for selective androgen receptor modulator. They are compounds that are similar to anabolic steroids, but the key difference lies in their specificity. Steroids are like an atomic bomb for growth — they make everything bigger, including things like your heart, liver, etc. SARMs are more similar to laser-guided warheads that target only the androgen receptors in your muscles and bone.

Another “advantage” of SARMs over anabolic steroids is that they don’t break down into other hormones (i.e. estrogen) that can lead to other unwanted side effects, such as man boobs (gynecomastia). As a result, many lifters have begun experimenting with SARMs viewing them as a “safer” alternative to faster muscle growth, but when you really drill down into the research, all isn’t rosy with these compounds.

Risks of SARMs

It’s commonly believed that SARMs come with little to no side effects and don’t suppress testosterone production, but research tells a different story.

One study in particular found that men taking 3mg of Ostarine (a very common SARM) experienced a 23% decrease in free testosterone and 43% drop in total testosterone.[1] Another piece of research conducted with Ligandrol, noted similar findings.[2]

SARMS also lower luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone[3], which decreases sperm count and testosterone levels, which explains why they’re being explored as potential male contraceptives.

An October 2017 press release from the FDA stated:

“Life threatening reactions, including liver toxicity, have occurred in people taking products containing SARMs. SARMs also have the potential to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, and the long-term effects on the body are unknown.”[4]

Perhaps the biggest reason to avoid SARMs is for the simple fact that they’re completely lacking in long term safety trials. They are not approved drugs or supplements; they are research chemicals that have yet to be thoroughly vetted or completely understood. Until more research is conducted on this compounds, it simply doesn’t make sense to put your health at risk just for the sake of making quicker gains.
